Blackthorn on steam machine

Hello m8s
I’m trying to get the Linux client running on my Steam Machine, but I can’t seem to get it to work. It installs the game in Desktop Mode, and I can log in, but under “Test Wine Setup” in the settings, it always says:

“Wine executable was not found or is not executable: wine”

I’m fairly inexperienced with Linux. Has anyone managed to get the client running on a Steam Machine and could explain what I’m doing wrong?
I’ve already tried entering the file path for various Wine files in Proton, but none of them worked. Do I need to grant any additional permissions or install something extra?

If anyone has managed to get it running on a Steam Machine, I’d really appreciate a short installation guide.

First off, I am by no means a Linux expert and I do not own a Steam Machine. So take my advice with a grain of salt and maybe someone with more knowledge can chip in.

That said, from what I understand the Blackthorn AppImage Launcher uses the default system installed Wine and not Proton or any other variations. I think that is why it tells you Wine is missing, since SteamOS does not come with regular Wine by default.

I did some searching regarding SteamOS and got conflicting information. Some say regular Wine can be installed from the SteamOS appstore/discover or whatever it is called and some say it can't. So I suppose you could try looking for Wine there and see if it installs and fixes the problem (depending on how it installs... SteamOS is immutable and I don't know how those installations are handled.)

Otherwise I think you are out of luck. This is why I do not like immutable distributions, as when you need to do some tinkering you have to jump through hoops with the risk of breaking your installation. Best would be if the Blackthorn team added the option to their launcher to look for a proton installation and run the game through there, that should work perfectly fine. Not sure how much work that would be for them, but you could probably ask for it in the suggestions forum and keep your fingers crossed.

Otherwise, I have seen people mention you can turn off the write protection in SteamOS and install packages normally via pacman (the package manager for Arch, that SteamOS is built on), but with varying results and issues. You'd have to look further into that if you want to try it, but getting Wine installed that way should theoretically work. I don't want to give you specific instructions as I have no on-hands experience with it and I don't want to risk breaking your system.

I wish you the best of luck and sorry I can't be of more help. If you have any specific questions do post them here and I will try to answer them if I can. I'll keep my eyes on this thread.

[edit] I did some testing, and you can actually point to a Proton version in the Launcher under "Wine executable". However, it will complain that there is no compat data path. I tried exporting a path in the "Custom command" setting but that did nothing, and tried through the terminal but that also did not work. If anyone knows the proper syntax feel free to chime in.
To be clear, the launcher is working for you, right? It's only launching the client that's the issue?

Which version of the Launcher are you using?

It looks like you can install Wine as a Flatpak on SteamOS, but I've never done that myself.
I have no clue about Linux am not technical and have 0 know how of anything like this but.
I saw your post and i seen there is video of this guy installing Eden dark age Camelot and his walk-through on youtube.

I know idea if this helps but fought i post it. He has it working on steam deck same operating system as steam machine.

Not a bad suggestion, but I checked the video out and there is most likely an issue. The Eden launcher does not use anything other than the .net framework and thus either needs that installed to the prefix or Wine Mono as a substitute. The Blackthorn launcher has an additional requirement: Microsoft Edge Webview 2, which really does not play nice with Wine. I ran into issues with that when I first tried getting Blackthorn to run on Linux (there was no Linux launcher yet then), and I could only ever get it to semi-work sometimes (a lot of crashing, black screens and so on). But it's of course always worth a try, things might have changed and it may work better now.
Make sure you're using the Linux Launcher (I recommend the AppImage version) from the downloads page:

Running the Windows version through WINE/Proton does not work well due to the libraries required.
